Scope and Content Note

Printed material covers material by and about Rushdie. Material by Rushdie includes essays from 1982 until 2000, opinion editorials from 1981 through 2005, and reviews from 1981 to 1995. Fictional pieces, either extracts from his major works or short stories published in periodicals, are also included.

Material about Rushdie surveys the magazine and newspaper articles written about him. The magazines primarily concentrate on the fatwa as crisis for the publishing industry, personal interviews with the author, and literary conversations from 1981 to 2008. Newspaper clippings from 1981 until 2006 chart the trajectory of Rushdie's career and the day-by-day unfolding of the controversy surrounding The Satanic Verses, with a strong emphasis on international and multilingual coverage of the fatwa. This series also contains reviews of his major and minor works.

Magazine and newspaper clippings collected by or sent to Rushdie from 1982-2005 are included in Subseries 8.3: General printed material along with programs of events he attended during the same years.
