Scope and Content Note

Printed material about Rushdie contains a variety of published resources pertaining to the author, including bestseller lists, magazine and newspaper articles, promotional material, and reviews of Rushdie's works. Magazine articles range from 1981 through 2008. Materials pertaining to the fatwa include 1989 articles discussing the British government's treatment of Rushdie immediately after the declaration of the fatwa, Ian McEwan's statement on Rushdie published in March of that year, publisher's notes and writer's pledges revealing the fatwa as an industry crisis, international reactions, a joint interview of Angela Carter and Rushdie in September 1992, statements by William Nygaard, the Norwegian publisher of The Satanic Verses in 1994 and 1995.

Newspaper articles range from 1981 through 2006. The author's personal scrapbook pages document the Islamabad demonstration in February 1989, and in March, statements of support and information on the book's pre-screening by religious scholars can be found. International appeals on Rushdie's behalf as well as political cartoons satirizing the duration of the fatwa chart the historical importance of the crisis can be found throughout the 1990s. Articles document the Sri Lankan decision to revoke BBC's right to film Rushdie's adaptation of Midnight's Children in 1998 as well as its 2003 film and stage productions.

Promotional material includes writings about his major and minor works. Other promotional material contains ads, notes about his appearances, publicity surrounding his Booker award and nomination, events held in Rushdie's honor, and speaker catalogues from the Lavin Agency. Reviews are divided between his major and minor works.
