Collection Description

Biographical Note

Shelton Palmer Sanford, educator, was born January 25, 1816, in Greensboro, North Carolina, and died August 9, 1896, in Macon, Georgia. He was a professor of mathematics (1839-1891) and acting president (1856-1858) at Mercer University, which was located in Penfield, Greene County, Georgia (1833-1870), and moved to Macon, Georgia in 1871..

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of diaries of Sheldon Palmer Sanford. Sanford's diaries document his activities (1860-1863; 1874; 1876; 1890; 1896) and contain the records of subscriptions to Penfield Baptist Church (1852-1857) and the records of tuition received for Mercer University (1862-1865). Diary entries for the Civil War period recount the progress of the war, elections, and the activities of Sanford's son Charley, who served in the Confederate Army. Judson Cheves, who served with Charley, married Charley's sister Anna. Entire collection available as photocopies.
