Collection Description
Biographical Note
Aram Saroyan was born in New York City in 1943 to author and playwright William Saroyan and actor Carol Grace. He attended the University of Chicago, New York University, and Columbia University, but did not finish a degree. He published his first poem in 1964 and while he is particularly known for his minimalist poetry, though he writes and publishes across genres. He received the Poetry Society of America’s William Carlos Williams Award for his volume Complete Minimal Poems in 2008. Saroyan married Gailyn Saroyan in 1968 and the couple had two children, Strawberry and Cream.
Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of the papers of Aram Saroyan from 1970-2021. It includes manuscript drafts of poems, plays, and a memoir; correspondence, including some with playwright Edward Albee; and photograph albums and scrapbooks documenting Saroyan’s life and career, including his time living and raising his children in a writer’s community in Bolinas California.
