Collection Description

Biographical Note

Harris Schiff, New York City poet, was part of the so-called second generation of New York School poets that arose during the 1960s and included Ted Berrigan, Ron Padgett, Anne Waldman, and Joe Brainard. Schiff was associated with The Poetry Project, a poetry organization established in 1966, operating out of St. Mark's Church-in-the-Bowery in New York City. The New York poets of this period were influenced by art and their work contained much of the same humor and collaborative spirit as their earlier counterparts in the New York School of Poets. His books include In the Heart of the Empire and Yo-Yo's with Money, which he co-authored with Ted Berrigan.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of the papers of Harris Schiff from 1961-2008. The papers include correspondence, writings by Schiff, works by others, subject files, photographs, and audio visual material. The collection documents Harris' life and creative works, as well as his collaborations and relationships with other New York poets during the 1960s-1970s.

The correspondence includes letters from Bill Berkson, Ted Berrigan, Allen Ginsberg, Anselm Hollo, Gerard Malanga, Alice Notley, Ron Padgett, Lewis Warsh, and Anne Waldman, among others. Many of the letters discuss current projects the poets were working on, as well as their social lives. Some correspondence from Anne Waldman and Alice Notley discuss Poetry Project business.

In addition to writings by Schiff himself, the collection also contains a substantial amount of works (both art and writings) by various friends and acquaintances including Ted Berrigan, Alice Notley, George Schneeman, and Lewis Warsh.

The audiovisual material includes audio recordings of readings/performances by Ted Berrigan, William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Simon Pettet, Harris Schiff, and Jack Spicer. Of particular interest in the audiovisual series are 8-10 hours of unedited informal video recordings which document Allen Ginsberg's everyday life in New York City. These recordings eventually became Ego Confessions, a 45-minute pilot for a proposed television show featuring Ginsberg. The recordings also include Ginsberg reading his poetry and discourses on many subjects including the confessional aspects of his work, capitalism, government surveillance, Mideast policy, and the use of media for war propaganda.
