Scope and Content Note

The series consists of the papers of William H. Scott, Sr. from 1848-1910, including correspondence, personal papers, writings, photographs and printed material. Personal papers include financial records, family marriage and death records, the family bible, and a Civil War era sword. Also included in Scott's personal papers are seven scrapbooks of clippings documenting African American history and politics, as well as Scott family history. Many scrapbooks are annotated.

Writings include numerous sermons and speeches penned by Scott. Photographs are primarily of Scott family members. Finally, printed material includes fliers, programs and clippings documenting African American political activity in Massachusetts and Washington, D.C. during this period, including Scott's personal involvement. Printed material from organizations such as the Boston Suffrage League, the New England Suffrage League, and St. John's Baptist Church in Woburn, Massachusetts are included.
