Scope and Content Note

The series consists of the papers of William H. Scott, Jr. from 1906-1982, including correspondence, personal papers, writings, photographs, subject files and printed material. Correspondence is personal in nature, and primarily consists of letters between Scott and his first wife Laura while he was in military training at Camp Pike, Arkansas, from 1918-1919. The correspondence details black life in the army during the Jim Crow era. Also included is one small file of correspondence belonging to Henry Thompson Scott. Personal papers include material relating to Scott's education, military service, property ownership, and career at Monsanto. Writings by Scott include numerous short essays, as well as notes and correspondence relating to a biography of his father, William H. Scott, Sr.

Photographs are primarily of family members and include many photos taken by William H. Scott, Jr. Subject files consist of materials collected by Scott on topics of interest and organizations with which he may have been involved. Finally, printed material consists primarily of clippings by and about Scott and the Scott family, as well as a small amount of items such as programs from African American organizations.
