Collection Description
Biographical Note
William Lester "Shep" Sheppard (1932-2004) was born in Greensboro, Georgia. He married Ann Chapman (1924-2011), also of Greensboro, in 1944. William spent thirty-one years in the Navy, rising to the level of Commander. He was stationed in the Pacific during World War II and later served as Naval Attaché for the United States Embassy in Oslo, Norway.
Scope and Content Note
The collection contains the papers of William L. and Ann Chapman Sheppard and their family from circa 1910-1970. The papers include correspondence, photographs, legal documents, military records, yearbooks and school papers, certificates, maps, and pamphlets. The bulk of the collection is correspondence written between 1945-1954 when William was stationed in the Pacific during World War II and later when he served as Naval Attaché in Oslo, Norway. Military records include naval yearbooks and promotion certificates as well as records pertaining to William's work at the Embassy in Norway. Included are programs and documents related to Ann's work with the Women's Missionary Union. The collection also includes yearbooks and school papers belonging to a variety of family members, as well as many family photographs.
