Collection Description
Biographical Note
Atlanta businessman Sol Singer (1918-2003) collected philatelic Judaica over the course of more than forty years. He died in Fulton County, Georgia in 2003.
Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of the stamps that were collected by Sol Singer including those issued by the state of Israel as well as stamps featuring Jewish themes issued all over the world from 1948-2008. Series 1 is a complete set of stamps of the State of Israel from the period just before independence up to 2002. The uniqueness of this collection is due not only to its completeness, but also to the fact that it contains corners, first day covers, and even sheets for each of the stamps issued. The early sets are very rare and valuable.
Series 2 contains stamps of Jewish content issued by countries around the world. No one knows how many such stamps exist, but the Singer collection contains several volumes of stamps on such subjects as famous Jews, Jewish holidays, topics from scripture, and the Holocaust.
Series 3 is a nearly complete set of stamps created by the Jewish National Fund to help raise money to purchase land in Palestine and to develop the land once the State of Israel had been established. These stamps date from circa 1902-1991.
Series 4 contains stamps that were part of the original Singer collection, but that he never incorporated them into his organized collection. Series 5 consists of materials that were purchased by Emory University's Institute for Jewish Studies and added to the Sol Singer collection of Philatelic Judaica after Mr. Singer's death in 2003. They include State of Israel stamps from 1991-2008 and some Judaica stamps.
Arrangement Note
Organized into four series: (1) Stamps from the State of Israel, (2) Judaica stamps, (3) Jewish National Fund stamps, (4) Unorganized by Singer, and (5) Additions.
