Series 2
Audiovisual materials, 1957-1998
Boxes 15 - 37

Scope and Content Note

The audiovisual series consist of quarter-inch magnetic tape reels, cassette tapes, digital audio tapes (DAT), and video tapes. The cassettes and DAT tapes have been divided into two categories: interviews tapes or production tapes. The interview tapes feature interviews conducted by the SRC as well as interviews from other institutions and archival repositories. The production tapes contain rough mixes of series' individual episodes at various stages of the production process as well as interviews with George King, the producer of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken?" and Steve Suitts, a former SRC executive director, about the history and development of project. The miscellaneous archival files include audiovisual materials gathered during the production of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken?" that transcend the five cities covered in the documentary, including two tapes of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s speeches from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

The video tapes relate to the movement in South Carolina, including two tapes of South Carolina Educational Television's 1991 "Manning Reunion" and one tape from the University of South Carolina Film Center about Orangeburg. The quarter-inch reels contain material from other repositories, including material documenting events in Little Rock, Arkansas, a speech by Martin Luther King, Jr. made during the Montgomery March, and Vincent Harding addressing an orientation session in Ohio for white northern students who volunteered for the Mississippi Freedom Summer project.
