Collection Description

Biographical Note

John Fisher (1914-1980) was a teacher at the grammar school in the community of Mexborough, England, starting as a student teacher in 1935 until his retirement as second deputy-headmaster and master of charge of the Sixth Form College in 1974. He taught both Ted Hughes and Brian O'Malley. Ted Hughes credits Fisher with introducing him to poetry, and they continued their relationship until Fisher's death in 1981.

Fisher was born in Millom in Northern England and moved to South Yorkshire when he went to Sheffield University to study English. He graduated in 1934 and earned a Master of Arts and Postgraduate Diploma in Education in 1935. He did his teaching practice at Mexborough, Yorkshire, and was offered a temporary appointment in January 1936 working his way to deputy headmaster before his retirement. He married his wife, Nancy, in 1938, and they had a daughter, Angela.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of materials relating to Ted Hughes and collected by his school teacher John Fisher and the Fisher family. Included are letters, writings, newspaper clippings and obituaries of Fisher and Hughes.
