Boxes 16-22; OP1

Historical Note

The International Foundation for Education and Self-Help was founded by Leon Sullivan in 1981. The organization focuses on Sub-Saharan Africa, implementing self-help partnership programs in education, healthcare, conflict mitigation and community development. IFESH has established more than 20 programs, including the African-African American Summit, the Peoples Investment Fund for Africa, the Self-Help Investment Program, Teachers for Africa, and Schools for Africa.

Scope and Content Note

The subseries contains records of the International Foundation for Education and Self-Help (IFESH) from 1982-1999. The records include correspondence, financial records, legal records, reports, printed material, and subject files. Correspondence is mostly to or from Leon Sullivan and relates to board meetings and IFESH program implementation. Financial and legal records include budgets and expenditure reports and documentation relating to IFESH's status as a non-profit organization. Reports include annual reports and reports on individual programs as well as collected reports from other national and international foundations relating to Africa.

The subject files in this subseries relate mostly to individual IFESH programs. Files include some correspondence, printed material such as brochures and newspaper clippings, and memos and reports. The African African-American Summit files make up the bulk of these subject files and also include planning material for the semiannual conference.
