Collection Description

Historical Note

The Sunflower Press (Mill Valley, California) was the name under which book artist Carol Cunningham created and published miniature books. Cunningham was born in La Grange, Illinois, in 1925 and attended the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign). In 1959, she moved to Japan with her husband, Bruce, a United States Air Force pilot, and began to study Japanese book arts and fine printing. She published her first book, Puffin, in 1962 following the family's return to the United States. Cunningham established the Sunflower Press in Mill Valley, California in 1964 and published more than 50 miniature books. She was honored by the Book Club of California and received a Milley Award for Lifetime Achievement from the city of Mill Valley. She died in 2013.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of ephemera from Sunflower Press from 1977-2000 and documents Carol Cunningham's miniature book-making process. Files may contain book mock-ups, off-cuts, notes, paper samples, or fabric samples; individual folders may not contain examples of every step of the book-making process. There is also a small amount of promotional material from the press.
