Collection Description
Historical Note
The Atlanta Coalition on the Transportation Crisis was an umbrella organization comprised of many community-based organizations opposed to the construction of Interstate 485 and the Stone Mountain Tollway. The Coalition was formed to raise money for a legal challenge to the highways, as well as to coordinate lobbying and other political action efforts. The organization garnered the support of community leaders such as Jimmy Carter and Andrew Young, and was ultimately able to stop construction of the proposed highways.
Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of files of the Atlanta Coalition on the Transportation Crisis created by organization secretary Virginia S. Taylor from 1970-1989. The files include correspondence, legal files, financial records, and printed material relating to the organization's fight against construction highways through Atlanta neighborhoods.
