Scope and Content Note

The series consists of Natasha Trethewey's correspondence and personal papers from 1957-2013. Correspondence contains personal and professional letters, including letters between Trethewey and her brother Joel Thomas Grimmette III, as well as literary correspondence with poets and writers such as Honorée Fanonne Jeffers, Jake Adam York and Kevin Young. The series also contains correspondence relating to Trethewey's publications, Pulitzer Prize award, and United States Poet Laureateship, and includes letters of congratulations from admirers and dignitaries such as the Senators of Georgia and Mississippi, Saxby Chambliss and Roger F. Wicker, and Harvard President Drew Gilpin Faust. Correspondence also contains letters between Trethewey’s parents, Gwendolyn Ann Turnbough and Eric Trethewey. Personal papers consist of Trethewey's diaries and notebooks, publication and appearance contracts, grant and fellowship applications, awards, and teaching files.

Correspondence is arranged in chronological order and personal papers are arranged in alphabetical order.

Restrictions on Access

Special restrictions apply: Correspondence between Gwendolyn Ann Turnbough and Eric Trethewey is closed to researchers until the deaths of Eric Trethewey and Natasha Trethewey.

Material relating to Joel Thomas Grimmette, III is closed until his death.

Financial, legal and other family papers are closed to researchers until the death of Natasha Trethewey.
