Collection Description
Biographical Note
Alfred Uhry, playwright, screenwriter, and lyricist, was born in 1936 in Atlanta, Georgia, to Ralph K. Uhry and Alene (Fox) Uhry. His father was a furniture designer and artist, and his mother was a social worker. Uhry attended Druid Hills High School (Atlanta, Georgia) and Brown University (Providence, Rhode Island). His first stage success was an adaption of Eudora Welty's The Robber Bridegroom, in 1978. He later wrote the play Driving Miss Daisy, which tells the story of the relationship between an elderly white southern woman and her African American chauffer. The play won a Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1988; Uhry's screenplay for the film adaptation later won an Academy Award in 1989. His musical about the trial of Leo Frank, Parade, won a Tony Award in 1999 making Uhry the only playwright to have won all three awards. In addition to his numerous plays, Uhry has written or collaborated on screenplays including Mystic Pizza (1988) and Rich in Love (1992). Much of his original work focuses on Jewish life in the American South.
Uhry married Joanna Kellogg in 1959 and the couple has four daughters: Emily, Elizabeth, Kate, and Nell.
Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of the papers of Alfred Uhry from 1909-2007 and include personal papers, scripts and other writings, promotional material, and audiovisual material. Personal papers primarily contain correspondence, photographs, and scrapbooks. Personal papers also contains a small amount of research about Leo Frank, awards, and screenplays by other writers. Correspondence is professional in nature and documents the writing and production of Uhry's plays and films. Photographs include images of Uhry with the casts of his plays and films and Uhry at awards ceremonies and other events, as well as photos of play and film sets.
Scripts and other writings include drafts of play scripts, screenplays, teleplays, and essays. Paper copies of drafts are arranged in roughly chronological order, to the extent that it could be identified. Many of the drafts are annotated by Uhry or his collaborators. Scripts are arranged by draft title with "see also" references to variant titles of the same work. The bulk of the section consists of drafts of Angel Reapers, Apples and Oranges, Divine Intervention, Dodsworth, Driving Miss Daisy, Last Night at Ballyhoo, a musical adaptation of John Berendt's Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, My Paris, Parade, Rich in Love, and Without Walls. Most screenplays also include film production documents such as cast lists and shooting schedules. Material for the plays Driving Miss Daisy, Without Walls, and Edgardo Mine also include materials from various productions of the works.
Promotional material consists of flyers, programs, and posters advertising Uhry's plays and films, including his early work The Robber Bridegroom. Promotional material also includes clippings and magazine articles about Uhry and his work. Audiovisual material contains recordings of Parade and The Robber Bridegroom, speeches and television appearances by Uhry, and interviews with Uhry.
Arrangement Note
Paper materials arranged by record type, then in alphabetical order.
Born digital files are arranged in alphabetical order by file name. Folders of files are as Uhry had them organized.
