Scope and Content Note

The series consists of George Walker's personal and professional correspondence from 1941-2005. Letters in the series document Walker's career as a pianist and composer. These letters include composition commission requests, requests for permission to perform compositions, invitations to perform, and notifications of awards and prizes... The series also documents Walker's academic career, most notably his fight for tenure at Smith College (Northampton, Massachusetts) from 1964-1966, appointments as visiting professor at numerous other colleges and universities, and his appointment and professorship at Rutgers University at Newark (New Jersey). There are also numerous letters of congratulations following Walker's receipt of the Pulitzer Prize in music in 1996. The series also includes personal letters from Walker's wife, Helen Siemens; Mary Zionbalist, founder of the Curtis Institute of Music (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) and patron of Walker's music; and his sons, Ian and Gregory.
