Collection Description

Biographical Note

Charles Thiot Winship (1903-1987), Emory alumnus and Atlanta businessman, was the son of George and Elizabeth Thiot Winship. Winship attended Tech High in Atlanta and graduated from Emory College in 1926. At Emory, he was a member of the debating team and of Chi Phi fraternity. After graduation, Winship practiced law, and then served as general counsel, vice-president, president, and chairman of the board for Fulton Supply Company. Winship was elected to the Emory University Board of Trustees in 1962, serving as its secretary (1965-1974) and as a member of its Executive Committee, Buildings and Grounds Committee, and Real Estate Committee. He was also active in the Alumni Association, the MERIT Funds Campaign, and the Friends of the Emory University Library, and was a long-time friend of and advocate for Emory University's libraries. The Winship family was responsible for the construction of the first dormitory on the Atlanta campus, Winship Hall, which was razed in 1985, but whose name lives on in the Winship Ballroom in the Dobbs University Center. Mr. Winship died in Atlanta May 16, 1987 at the age of eighty-three.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of the papers of Charles T. Winship from 1928-1976. The papers include files relating to Emory University and a number of travel diaries. The majority of the files pertain to Winship's long association with Emory University, including correspondence and committee files and minutes. Among the individuals represented in these files are Emory President Sanford S. Atwood, Board of Trustees Chairman Henry L. Bowden, Director of Libraries Guy Redvers Lyle, Dean of Alumni Henry Prentice Miller, and Emory administrator Robert F. Whitaker. Winship's copies of minutes of meetings of the Board of Trustees and its Executive Committee have been separated as the record copies of these minutes constitute a separate record series in the Emory Archives and are closed for research use without special permission. At the end of the collection are filed four travel diaries apparently kept by Charles Winship's father, George Winship. Of particular note is the 1928 diary that describes in detail a voyage from New York to Cuba, through the Panama Canal, and to the West Coast and Hawaii.
