Collection Description
Biographical Note
Charles Rupert Wood (1909-1981) was born in Newville, Alabama. He attended Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University) in Alabama and was the first licensed African American electrician in Atlanta, Georgia, as well as co-owner of Johnson and Wood Electric Company in Atlanta. Wood married Nettie Ruth Carr (1911-2011), the daughter of Paul Carr and Helen (Keith) Carr, and a graduate of Shaw University (Raleigh, North Carolina) and Atlanta University. The couple had four children: Charles Rupert Wood, Jr., Harry Keith Wood, Jeanie Marie Wood Shuffett, and Lynn Danielle Wood.
Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of the papers of the Charles R. and Ruth C. Wood family from circa 1900-2014 and includes school records, correspondence, financial records, printed material, and photographs. Correspondence contains letters between Charles and his mother while he was attending Tuskegee; Ruth and one of her sons while he was serving in the Vietnam War; and letters between Ruth and Charles and other friends and family. There is also a significant amount of correspondence belonging to Helen Carr, a relative of Ruth. Printed material includes yearbooks and ephemera from Tuskegee University and Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta. There is also a small amount of printed material advertising the Johnson and Wood Electric Company.
