Series 1
Subject files, 1819-1988
Boxes 1-364; BV 1-10

Scope and Content Note

The series consists of files that include correspondence, printed material, and unpublished documents about people, businesses, organizations, and subjects important to Robert W. Woodruff. Of particular interest in this series are the files relating to Coca-Cola and the Coca-Cola Company. These files document Woodruff's long involvement with the company. In addition to the files in the Coca-Cola section, there is more material about the Coca-Cola Company in the individual files of Coca-Cola employees and executives, including Arthur A. Acklin, J. Paul Austin, James Farley, Roberto Goizueta, Ralph Hayes, Max Keith, Benjamin H. Oehlert, John A. Sibley, Lee Talley, and others. This series also includes materials about other businesses that Woodruff had connections to, including American Express, General Electric Company, Southern Railway, and White Motor Company.

Also of interest are the files relating to Ichauway Plantation, Woodruff's South Georgia vacation home. Although Woodruff invited hunters there, Ichauway was also a working farm. The Ichauway files document many aspects of life at the plantation from the number of quail and turkey he and his guests killed to the types of crops the tenant farmers raised there.

The subject files also contain correspondence with Georgia and Atlanta politicians, including Walter F. George, Herman Talmadge, William B. Hartsfield, and Ivan Allen, Jr., Atlanta journalists Ralph McGill, and the golfer and attorney [Robert Tyre] Bobby Jones.

This series also details Woodruff's myriad philanthropic activities, including his involvement with Atlanta's Memorial Arts Center and his gifts to Atlanta-area educational institutions, including Agnes Scott College, the Atlanta University Center, Emory University, which includes information about the Emory Field Station at Ichauway, and the Georgia Institute of Technology.
