Collection Description

Biographical Note

Jake Adam York (1972-2012) was an American poet. He was born in West Palm Beach, Florida, and was raised largely in rural Gadsden, Alabama. York graduated from Southside High School in Gadsden in 1990 and received a Bachelor of Arts in English from Auburn University (Auburn, Alabama). He then received his Master of Fine Arts and Ph.D. in creative writing and English literature from Cornell University (Itacha, New York). He worked as an Associate Professor of English and Creative Writing at the University of Colorado, Denver. In 2011-2012, he was a visiting faculty scholar at Emory University's James Weldon Johnson Institute for the Study of Race and Difference in Atlanta, Georgia. He died on December 16, 2012 in Denver, Colorado, from a stroke.

York published four books of poetry: Murder Ballads, which won the 2005 Elixir Prize in Poetry; A Murmuration of Starlings, which won the 2008 Colorado Book Award in Poetry; Persons Unknown (2010), which was an editor's selection in the Crab Orchard Series in Poetry; and Abide, which was published posthumously in 2014 and was named a finalist for the 2014 National Book Critics Circle Award. York also was named a posthumous recipient of the Witter Bynner Fellowship by the U.S. Post Laureate in 2014.

The collection consists of the papers of Jake Adam York. The files include poetry, research files, published materials, educational and professional files, and personal files. Folder titles are taken from their original titles. Poetry files consist of poetry written both by and for Jake Adam York, including handwritten and printed drafts at various stages of development. Research files contain material Jake Adam York accumulated for his research and poetry, including handwritten notes and photocopied articles and manuscripts. Published materials are publications of various media, including contributions by Jake Adam York, as well as press coverage on his published works. Professional files consist of materials relating to Jake Adam York's academic career, including credentials, papers written as a student, and teaching materials. Personal files consist of Jake Adam York's personal correspondence and files related to his personal life.
