Laney to address issues of racism and discrimination at Emory University and to encourage the recruitment and retention of minority faculty. Records in the collection include Executive Committee and subcommittee minutes and annual reports, travel fund applications, and items related to campus events and symposiums sponsored by the commission. There are also some materials related to a racially motivated grievances including an incident involving Emory professor C. M. Worthman.

The President's Commission on Research at Emory was established at Emory University in 2001 under then President William M. Chace to examine the vitality of research in the sciences and humanities at the University. The Commission operated concurrently with a ten-year accreditation study conducted by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) to define research, identify who performs research, devise better ways to support research-intensive faculty, and understand how research both affects and is affected by Emory campus culture. The collection documents the findings of the President's Committee on Research at Emory's findings and includes correspondence between committee members, committee meeting minutes, and general reports drafted for faculty, along with general administrative materials.
